School of Social Sciences

History

The School of Social Sciences was established in October 2004 following the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester UMIST.  The School has one of the largest concentrations of social sciences staff in higher education in the UK.  The constituent disciplines had previously formed the core of the highly successful Faculty of Social Sciences and Law at the University of Manchester.

The School is a leading centre of research and higher education in Economic Studies, Politics, Philosophy, Social Anthropology, Sociology and Census Survey Research.  The School has recently moved into the new state of the art facility, the Arthur Lewis Building, named after the Nobel Prize winning economist who taught at Manchester in the 1950s.
